Fast action against climate change
Climate change and its consequences
Climate change, conflicts and crises present the world with enormous challenges to solve these interlinked problems. The biggest contributors to the climate crisis are greenhouse gases, primarily from the energy, transport, urbanisation and industry sectors, followed by agriculture and forestry. This requires action from everyone. The United Nations called on the global community to do everything it can to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Greenhouse gases and their effects
The higher the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the more our planet warms up. This leads to gradual environmental changes: Ice and snow melt, sea levels rise, natural disasters such as heat waves, drought, storms, heavy rain and flooding increase. Desert areas are expanding, soils are salinising, groundwater levels are falling and biodiversity on land and in the water is declining. These dangers for humans, animals and nature can only be averted by working together.
The target path to reduce greenhouse gas emission
In the Paris Climate Agreement, the global community set itself the goal of limiting the rise in temperature to below two degrees Celsius by the end of the century. To achieve this, global greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 60% by 2030 and by 90% by 2040 when compared to 2019.
