Our core idea: The idea of the Raiffeisen cooperative
One of Smelty + Partner’s locations is in Neuwied, the nucleus of the Raiffeisen cooperative idea in Germany. What was true in the 18th century is still relevant today.
Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818 – 1888) from Neuwied developed the idea of the cooperative with the aim of ‘the welfare of all, not the profit of a few’. He did not believe in unbridled capitalism, but in joint, responsible and practical action for the benefit of many people. For him, this included fair financial advice, sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly energy supply and affordable living space.
In 2016, UNESCO recognised the idea of cooperatives as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Today, cooperatives secure millions of jobs worldwide.
